about the studio
on a sunny day in early spring, when i was about 10 years old, i stayed home from school with a bad cold. when i went to bed that evening, i was horrified by the realization that i had not stepped outside all day. i couldn’t believe that i had voluntarily confined myself inside four walls for an entire 24 hours. as i lay in bed, trying to fall asleep amidst racing thoughts about free will, i promised myself i would make it outside at least once every day from there on out.
for 16 years, i accomplished this goal. a health scare at 26 broke that streak, since i had to stay in a hospital for 8 days straight. i at least had a window looking across east 77th street - that was nice - but i ached for sunshine on my face. the photos on my camera roll provided solace until i was discharged. i am healthy now, and i am grateful for the ability to get fresh air every day.
getting outside and seeing the world is so important, and i have always been enamored with the beauty found on the streets of new york, at home in southern california, or on vacation in beautiful places. these prints are for the days when we can’t make it outside, and i hope they serve as a reminder to walk out the front door, look up from our phones, and take in the beauty of the world when we can.
